Get Involved and Volunteer!
Whatever your skills or interests, there’s a place for you at Friends of Hospice Ottawa!
Our volunteers, with their wide range of skills and dedication, make it possible for us to provide the services we offer.
Our volunteers commit more than 13000 hours of service and drive over 35000 kilometers each year for Friends of Hospice Ottawa and are involved in every aspect of our program as a fundamental part of an interdisciplinary team.
At Friends of Hospice Ottawa volunteers fill a variety of roles
- Direct Care volunteers who work with our clients and families
Volunteers receive training to enable them to volunteer in homes, retirement homes and at day hospice. They provide respite (rest) for caregivers, provide personal care for clients, visit with clients and families, run errands, write letters, and provide support to the grieving
- Administrative Service volunteers
Volunteers receive orientation to answer phones, assemble information packets, file, greet family members, guests, and visitors, prepare mailings, write acknowledgments, and assist in most office needs.
- Special Event volunteers
Volunteers help with our Annual Fashion Show, Hike for Hospice, Girls Night Out and many other fun and exciting fund raising events.
- Transportation volunteers
Mobility is the key to independence for everyone. Friends of Hospice Ottawa offers transportation to assist people to get to medical appointments and other daily activities, including other social services, shopping and recreation.
In addition to contributing to our programs and services, Friends of Hospice Ottawa recognizes that volunteers want their experience to be rewarding. Some of the benefits of volunteering include:
- Making a difference in people's lives
- Networking and friendships
- Developing skills and experience
- Ongoing education and development
- Bringing about social/organizational change

Caregiver Day Testimonial
Thank you to everyone involved with organizing the FOH Volunteer Caregiver Day. I had a perfectly splendid day and returned home feeling relaxed and filled with joy.

It was great to be able to experience reflexology and reiki in the hands of such caring, sensitive practitioners. And Denise would have chuckled at me today trying to repeat her brain gym activities.
I've enclosed the forest photo to demonstrate the peace I felt during this quiet outing. However, taking part in belly dancing with Brenda was a totally opposite effect - a true belly laughing outlet for me!
A special thanks to Carolyn for her on-site easy-going, capable organizing. She managed to ensure a relaxing atmosphere so that the volunteers could kick-back and enjoy!
Of course, I also offer my thanks for the FOH bag that I was fortunate to win in the draw. I'll use it with love and pride in FOH.
In friendship and caring,
Jill McKinlay
Volunteer Education
Volunteer education is an integral part of ensuring that supportive services, delivered to individuals and their families, are available from volunteers capable of delivering high quality care in a safe, competent and effective manner. In conjunction with the Ontario Hospice Association accreditation standards, Friends of Hospice Ottawa has developed and is currently utilizing a standardized volunteer education program. This program provides 30 hours of hospice information to volunteers who are interested in working with and/or caring for those who are living with/dying from a life threatening illness.
Friends of Hospice Ottawa also provides training specific to transportation services and office/event planning support.
Volunteer education and training programs run in the Spring and Fall each year.
All of our training is provided without charge to those who contribute service hours back to us. Your donations are always welcomed to help us fund and expand our programs.
