In Home Volunteer SupportFriends of Hospice Ottawa provides:
Rather than thinking of Hospice as where you turn when there is nothing else to do, think of it as the "something more" that can be done for the individual and their family when faced with life threatening illness. Hospice provides active compassionate care that focuses on comfort and support for the client and family. In-Home volunteer support plays an important role in Hospice/palliative care, especially for people who are isolated in our community. Not everyone has access to the support of family and friends. Volunteers offer emotional and practical support through conversation, companionship, outings, and other activities, in the way a friend or neighbour would. The Hospice volunteer provides client support at home or retirement home while providing emotional support or respite to family and friend caregivers. This program is available seven days per week, and assistance and advice is available via pager 24 hours a day. How Do I Arrange for a Hospice Volunteer to Visit? Anyone can make a referral to Hospice — you, a family member, caregiver, friend, physician or other health care professional. When you contact Friends of Hospice Ottawa, our Support Care nurse will arrange to meet with you and/or your loved one to decide the best type of care to meet your needs and then a volunteer match will be made. Carefully screened, trained and selected volunteers meet the special needs and preferences of individuals and their families in their home environment. These volunteers visit and provide support throughout the course of the individual’s illness. Family support may continue for up to one year following the death of a family member. How Can a Volunteer Help Me or my Loved One?
All services are provided without charge. Your donations are welcomed to help us fund and expand our programs. |
