Caregiver Support Program

There are only four kinds of people in the world: Those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.
— Rosalynn Carter

When the person you assist receives care services from Friends of Hospice Ottawa, you as a caregiver, receive support from the staff and volunteers on your team.

Friends of Hospice Ottawa acknowledges and addresses the five key elements to sustaining family and friend caregivers: caregiver pic
  • recognition
  • information
  • education
  • support
  • respite

Friends of Hospice Ottawa recognizes the important responsibility it is to be a caregiver for a loved one who has a life-threatening illness. This is a 24 hour a day undertaking – although the client may be fairly independent, caregivers offer a range of support, from physical care to personal care, emotional and social support, meal planning and transportation. They often have responsiblity for the challenging task of coordinating interactions with medical professionals and other agencies supporting the ill person.

Friends of Hospice provides resources for caregivers and referrals to support groups.
Our volunteers provide respite so the caregiver can have a break on a regular basis.  Volunteers also provide the listening ear or comfort to help caregivers find the strength to cope.
The Day Hospice allows caregivers 4 – 5 hours of uninterrupted time for themselves as their loved one enjoys a day away from home.

Friends of Hospice hosts semi-annual caregiver retreats supporting up to 40 caregivers to a day of rest and relaxation on the banks of the Ottawa River at the Galilee Retreat Centre. The spring retreat is designed for family caregivers and the fall retreat is for hospice caregiver volunteers.

All services are provided without charge. Your donations are welcomed to help us fund and expand our programs.
