LCBO stores raise funds for Hospices in Ontario FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 17th, 2010 Starting May 1, the public can help support hospices in their community by making a donation at any of the more than 600 LCBO stores throughout Ontario. Donation boxes for the Hospice Association of Ontario will be displayed at LCBO checkout counters until May 31. Ontario’s Hospices serve more than 450 communities throughout the province, with 13,700 hospice volunteers providing 700,000 hours of care to over 12,500 people each year. LCBO’s donation box program will provide financial support to the local community hospices; help individuals find hospice care in their community and support families needing information on how to care for a loved one through an End-of-Life Information and Referral Centre (1-800-349-3111 or www.hospiceontario.ca); and promote volunteerism for local community hospices. “Hospice is about helping people live with dignity and support. We appreciate the support we receive from LCBO, its employees and especially its customers. LCBO’s province-wide store network will help raise public awareness and funds to care for people across Ontario,” says Rick Firth, Executive Director of the Hospice Association of Ontario. “We take our community involvement very seriously and are pleased to partner with the Hospice Association of Ontario,” says LCBO President and CEO Bob Peter. “LCBO’s customers and staff always give generously to help their fellow Ontarians and we appreciate their contributions to these worthy causes.” The Hospice Association of Ontario is one of 26 provincial, as well as numerous local charities that will benefit from the LCBO’s province-wide donation box program in 2010. In 2009, LCBO raised a total of $4.2 million for charities through special programs and initiatives, of which $3.8 million was raised through in-store fundraising. In addition, LCBO’s annual dividend transfer to the Ontario government, which totaled $1.4 billion in fiscal 2008-09, excluding taxes, supports a wide range of important government programs, services and priorities, including health care and education. The Hospice Association of Ontario thanks the public for its support when shopping at their local LCBO store during the month of May. Media Contacts: Stephanie Petroff
